Savannah is situated at the mouth of the Savannah River, which forms the border between Georgia and South Carolina. The city is located at 31 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude, and 81 degrees, 5 minutes west longitude.

The area is crisscrossed by rivers and creeks, many of them affected by the tides. The Intracoastal Waterway runs along the coast, and there are many square miles of ecologically vital marshes.
